Since its inception in 1989, the NZ Masters Games has grown from 1500 entrants competing across 29 sports to over 8,000 entrants and 67 sports, making it the biggest Masters Games event in New Zealand by far. The games is a 9 day event with 67 different sports and over 580 individual events. One of the notable aspects of the games in Wanganui is the intimacy of the city. The Games Village at Springvale Park is within 10 minutes of the main street. Most venues are within 10 minutes drive of the village. You will find the sports venues to be top quality and the weather is guaranteed to be perfect.

Cooks Gardens
One of New Zealand’s leading outdoor sporting venues, and famous as the home of New Zealand’s first sub 4-minute mile when Peter Snell claimed the record here in 1962. Cooks Gardens features a 250-metre wooden cycling Velodrome and the Westpac Stadium with a synthetic athletic track.
 
Golf
Wanganui boasts 2 major championship golf courses. Wanganui Golf Club is the home of Belmont links, an 18 hole Championship course and Castlecliff Golf Club a par 72 links course. There is also the 9-hole Tawhero Public Golf Complex and Driving Range.
 
Mountain Biking
Recreational mountain bike tracks are a feature of Hylton Park, 4 km from the city centre. The course is made up of a series of benched single tracks winding through pine and gum trees and linked by 4WD vehicle roads. There is open access to this wilderness at all times. To get there, head north along Somme Parade and turn left into Brunswick Road.
 
Springvale Park
An 11-hectare complex equipped with modern multi-use facilities for a wide range of sports which includes the Splash Centre with a 25-metre indoor heated swimming pool offering a range of recreational swimming and water activities.   Springvale Park is the North Island base for the New Zealand Masters Games, the largest multisport event in New Zealand.
